Sumathi Valavu comes from director Vishnu Sasi Shankar and writer Abhilash Pillai, their second team-up after Malikappuram. This Malayalam horror comedy stars Arjun Ashokan, Malavika Manoj, and Saiju Kurup in main roles. The story draws from real Kerala folklore about a haunted road curve.
The movie takes us to a 1990s village in Kerala, near the Tamil Nadu border. Local people fear crossing a specific road turn at night, believing the ghost of Sumathi guards it. She was a pregnant woman murdered by her lover in the 1950s.

Cast Performance
Arjun Ashokan
Arjun fits perfectly as the scared, unsure hero. He’s not your typical brave protagonist – he gets frightened easily, which makes him relatable. I liked his natural acting in the first half.
But his character changes suddenly in the second half. The scared boy becomes an action hero without any proper reason. This inconsistency bothered me throughout the movie.
Supporting Cast
Balu Varghese plays his loyal friend with his usual comic timing. Malavika Manoj handles the female lead role well, though she doesn’t get much depth to work with.
Sidharth Bharathan and Balu Varghese deliver the best comedy moments. Their deadpan humor actually works better than the horror elements. Other actors like Bobby Kurian and Gokul Suresh are wasted in small roles.
Direction and Technical Work
Vishnu Sasi Shankar captures the forest scenes effectively. The night sequences create genuine scares, especially when characters encounter supernatural events. The village atmosphere feels authentic.
However, the pacing becomes uneven. The second half drags with unnecessary heroic moments and fight scenes. Some sequences feel included just to extend the runtime.
Cinematography and Music
Shankar P.V.’s camera work shines in horror scenes. The forest locations and night shots build proper tension. Ranjin Raj’s background music supports the spooky atmosphere well.
Sound design by Rajakrishnan and Vishnu P.C. enhances the supernatural moments. They create effective jump scares through audio tricks.
What I Liked
Comedy Works
The humor saves this movie from being completely forgettable. Several scenes made me laugh out loud, especially when the gang does ridiculous things together. The comedy timing feels natural, not forced.
Nostalgic Feel
The 90s setting brings back memories of old Malayalam ghost stories. It reminds me of Romancham and classic horror comedies. This nostalgic charm helps connect with the audience.
Folklore Element
Using real Kerala legends makes the story more interesting. Local audiences can relate to these village beliefs and superstitions.
What Could Be Better
Predictable Structure
The movie follows a very familiar template. It has the intro song, two romantic numbers, hero mockery scenes, and unnecessary fight sequences. This outdated structure makes everything feel too predictable.
Song Problems
The songs are the biggest weakness. They come at wrong moments and kill the movie’s flow. None of them add any value to the story or characters. I wish they had skipped most of these musical numbers.
Weak Ending
After building decent tension, the climax disappoints completely. The resolution doesn’t use the mystery setup properly. You’re left wondering where the story was actually going.
Limited Horror
Instead of exploring the ghost story deeply, the film focuses more on family drama. Sumathi’s character becomes a side plot rather than the main threat. More supernatural scenes would have helped.
